In this post, I won't talk about how much student debt has increased. Instead, I'll show you.
This depressing but effective graphic comes from the blog Jezebel.
What if the graphic had included 1980 or 1970? Would we even be able to see the dots representing them on such a chart?

This is why I never listen to Baby Boomer cockroaches who tell us to quit "whining."
ReplyDeleteLet's face it; school is over. There is no way this for- profit nonsense will ever right itself, and let us admit right now that colleges now see themselves as businesses and not public utilities.
ReplyDeleteI'm predicting a very hard death for the colleges in five years or so - the debt load is impossible, and I see cash-strapped places in retarded building booms....Google San Diego State; they are refurbishing/expanding a standing building WHILE ALSO building a new monster student center that dominates College Avenue. They aren't the only ones.
Did they adjust for inflation for this graphic? Is it in constant dollars or raw dollars?
ReplyDeleteAnon--As I understand, it is in constant dollars.
DeleteNando--They don't realize how good they have it, do they?
Strelnikov--As long as academic administrators are rewarded for expanding their budgets, insanities like the one you've described at SD State will continue, and colleges will "see themselves as businesses and not public utilities."
